How to Know God

God is faithful by whom you were called

into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

1 CORINTHIANS 1:9

The story is told of a pleasant dinner gathering with about twenty guests, among whom were an actor and a minister. Someone asked the actor if he would do a dramatic reading of the Twenty-third Psalm. He began, “The Lord is my shepherd …” and recited the full psalm from memory with great beauty and style. Everyone was impressed and applauded him greatly.

After a pause, someone asked the minister to recite the same passage. He was reluctant to follow such an act, but they prevailed upon him. He too had memorized the sacred words, and he too delivered them verbatim. After he finished, there was a hush, followed by tepid applause.

But the actor was impressed. He stood up and declared, “I may know the psalm.” Then he pointed to the minister and said, “But our guest here knows the Shepherd.”

It’s one thing to know about God. It’s quite another to know God. Up to this point, we’ve talked about faith in God, evidence for God, and the fact that God is revealed in Christ. Now we want to talk about knowing Him personally. When we know Him, even if some dark shadows may come our way and obscure Him, we have the quiet assurance that He is indeed there and not hidden after all.
